Flappy Bird Tips: How to Score 10, 20 and Beyond Without Rage-Quitting

Most first games of Flappy Bird end with a score of 0 to 3, and most of those deaths are the same death: two quick taps, a climb into the top pipe, the thud. The game is hard, but it is hard in a consistent way, and the fix is a rhythm rather than reflexes.

1. Find the beat

Every tap gives the bird the same upward kick, and gravity pulls it back at the same rate every time. Tapping about twice a second keeps it roughly level. Play a few runs where you ignore the pipes entirely and just try to hold the bird at one height; once that feels automatic, the pipes are only small corrections on top of the beat.

2. Adjust early, not on the pipe

The pipes arrive at a fixed spacing and the gap is placed at random. From the moment a gap appears on the right edge you have the whole distance to line up with it. Move up or down while the previous pipe is still passing, so that by the time the new one reaches the bird you are tapping the steady beat straight through the middle.

3. Tap at the bottom of the fall

The bird's collision circle is smaller than its sprite, so it can dip slightly closer to the bottom pipe than looks safe. Tapping late, near the bottom of each dip, produces a flatter flight than tapping early and high, and flat is what threads gaps.

4. Look at the next pipe, not the bird

The bird never moves sideways. Your eyes belong on the gap that is coming, because that is the only information that changes. Players who watch the bird react to the pipe when it is already on top of them.

5. Set a target and stop

Bronze is 10, silver 20, gold 30, platinum 40. Pick the next medal, play until you get it, then stop for the day. Flappy Bird punishes tilted, tired play; the second session after a break is nearly always better than the twentieth run of the first.

About world records

Videos exist of runs into the hundreds and beyond, and the original game's score display had room for four digits. There is no official record keeper, so treat any single number you read as a claim rather than a fact. For everybody else, a real platinum medal — 40 clean pipes — is a genuinely rare thing and a good place to stop bragging.
