Super Mario Bros — Play Free Online

This Super Mario Bros page runs a fan-made browser remake of Nintendo's original side-scrolling platformer. It is not an official Nintendo release; it was built in the Construct web engine, and its sounds and level names follow the classic game. You play as Mario, running and jumping from left to right through each stage until you reach the flagpole or, at the end of a castle, the axe that drops Bowser's bridge.

Levels in this version

The remake does not include the whole original game. Its files contain the first two worlds:

• World 1: levels 1-1, 1-2, 1-3 and the castle level 1-4.
• World 2: levels 2-1, 2-2, 2-3 and the castle level 2-4.
• Secret areas reached through pipes from 1-1, 1-2 and 2-1, and a pipe-walk scene between stages.

An intermission screen appears between stages, and the game keeps track of score, coins, lives and the time limit. Running out of time shows TIME UP, and losing every life ends with GAME OVER.

Enemies and hazards

The enemy list in the build matches the early worlds of the original. Goombas walk into you and can be squished from above. Koopas come in green, red and blue versions, some with wings, and leave shells behind that you can kick. Piranha Plants rise out of pipes, rotating firebars guard the castles, and Bowser waits at the end of the castle stages breathing flames. Lifts carry you across gaps, and some stages scroll on their own.

Power-ups

• Mushroom makes small Mario grow into Super Mario, who survives one hit.
• Fire Flower lets Mario throw fireballs.
• Starman makes Mario flash and briefly invincible.
• Coins come from blocks and floating rows, and some blocks give several coins; 1UP items add a life.

Controls

The remake takes keyboard input and also has touch zones on screen for phones and tablets. Mario can walk, run, jump, crouch, climb and throw fireballs once he has a Fire Flower.

Tips

• Stomp a Koopa and kick its shell into the enemies ahead of you.
• Explore pipes in 1-1, 1-2 and 2-1, since those are the levels with secret areas.
• Grab Mushrooms when you see them: as Super Mario, a hit makes you shrink instead of costing a life.
